1) Condes de Barcelona: Gorgeous hotel perfectly located in the main shopping street of Barcelona (Bond Street and Oxford Street kind of shopping). 5 minutes walk to Plaza Catalunya and La Ramblas, and with the best terrace bar and view of Barcelona (plus pool!). Ask for the seventh floor rooms in the more modern part of the hotel and get a private terrace. Rooms from 118 euros (low season)

Banys Oriental hotel
2) Boutique in el Born: Banys Oriental is a clean, cosy, classic boutique style hotel in the historical Born area of the city. It´s well-priced at 105 euros for a double room and is located 5 minutes walk from the Ramblas. The suites aren´t in the same building but are of the same standard. A great option for a city break.

Terrace of Hotel Pulitzer
3) For a cool, modern hotel in the centre of town, book into the Hotel Pulitzer. It´s a 4 star boutique hotel and although it´s centrally located it´s not super noisy and has a fantastic terrace for summer drinks. Rooms from 140 euros (low season).

4) Ohla Hotel: A rooftop pool & Michelin-starred restaurant are on offer in this centrally located modern hotel. With rooms from 220 euros a night it´s at the high end of the scale but worth it if you want to treat yourself! 5 minutes walk from the Ramblas and 10 to the Port.

5) At the other end of the scale you can do chic and simple in the Practik Hotel in Barcelona. They´re clean, elegant, really economic and centrally located. You can go for the room with terrace option or choose to stay in the apartment if you´re thinking of a weekend trip with friends. Doubles from 77 euros.

6) Special Occasion: It has to be the W Hotel. With it´s beachfront location, swimming pool and bar and stunning suites with private terraces and hot tubs (which are like mini-apartments!), this is a weekend everyone has to try at least once! The hotel itself is sail-shaped and sits right on the edge of the water where you can watch the paddle-surfers as you sip on a mojito (want one now!). You´re a cab ride from the centre but a walk from some great seafood restaurants and for a cheap midday option head downstairs to Il Gallito for tapas and wine.

7) Enjoy the weekend in a beautifully rennovated 18th Century Palace located in a charming square in the Gothic area of Barcelona. The square is peaceful and pretty and you can enjoy dinner sitting on the terrace. The Hotel Neri is the perfect mix of old & new Catalonia set against an impressive historical backdrop. The rooms are modern and elegant and start from 210 euros.

8) Great terrace, great rooms: Hotel Vila Emilia is a 10 minute walk from the centre.  It´s clean, cosy, does a great breakfast and has a fantastic rooftop terrace with live music. It´s a 4 star boutique hotel with rooms from 102 euros.

Modern and central - Hotel Alexandra
9) 4 star comfort at a low price: Hotel Alexandra was recently voted by Conde Nast as one of the world´s most exciting new hotels and so with rooms from 118 euros, Hotel Alexandra is a great option. It´s in a great location in the heart of the shopping area and close to Passeig de Gracia, and the twinkly fairy lights in the entrance are the perfect welcome.

  3. When the terraces are open (usually spring to the end of autumn), anyone can head up to most terraces after about 5 or 6pm. The Pulitzer is gorgeous for a post-shopping drink in the centre of town!
